The healthy food pyramid, considered to be an ideal breakup of our recommended nutrition, gives fresh fruits great importance. After all, these bounties of nature come packed with essential nutrients such as fiber, vitamins and minerals, and help prevent and regulate a variety of diseases such as cardiovascular and stroke problems, diabetes, kidney stones, bone damage, birth defects and other chronic diseases, as well as ensuring that you stay in the pink of health.
Every one of us should be consuming between 1 to 2.5 cups of fruit a day, but for many reasons we don’t. While some of us leave out the fruit in our diet because we find it too bland, others are in a conundrum as to how to incorporate it in their meals. And in this way, we lose out on all the goodness of fruits, compromising on our wellness.
But fret not, because there’s a solution to this problem, and a sweet one at that! By incorporating fruit into your home made dessert menu, you can not only satisfy your sweet tooth through healthy desserts, but can also get your daily dose of fruits, thereby making this a guilt-free indulgence.
Here’s a list of home made sweet recipes that will also make tasty yet healthy snacks:
Summer Fruit Salad
- 1 teaspoon honey
- 1 cup assorted berries
- 1 orange, pitted and sliced
- 1 peach, pitted and sliced
- 1 plum, pitted and sliced
- Few mint leaves
- 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
- A dash of lime
Toss all ingredients together in a large bowl, and let it rest for atleast half an hour before serving. The easiest yet freshest health recipe!
- 500 gms apples, peeled and cut into ½ inch pieces
- 1 cup rolled oats
- 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon powder
- 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 stick unsalted butter, cut into small cubes
- 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
In a large bowl, mix all dry ingredients: flour, sugar, salt and 2 tablespoons sugar. Add butter to mixture using a knife, and keep cutting until butter has been completely absorbed. Add oats to the mixture and with your hands, keep handling mixture until large lumps form. Put mixture in freezer to chill. In another large bowl, mix apples with lemon juice, cinnamon powder and remaining 1/2 cup sugar. Put this mixture in a baking dish and top it with the mixture that has been cooling in the freezer. Bake until golden. Accompanied by icecream, cream or even a glass of milk, this dish is a wonderful home made sweet recipe.
Berry Nutty Yogurt
- 500 gms yogurt (Greek or plain)
- 500 gms strawberries, cut
- 3 tablespoons honey
- 75 gms pistachios (roasted and unsalted), cut
Mix the yogurt and strawberries and let them rest to allow the essence of the berries to mix with the yogurt. Drizzle honey on top and add pistachios right before serving, and you’ve got yourself a sweet recipe that can be had as a healthy dessert or a healthy snack.
