Fever

Understanding A Fever:

A fever by itself is not termed as an illness or a disorder. Also known as a high fever or a high temperature, this condition is usually a symptom that indicates an underlying disease or medical disorder, and in most cases is caused due to an infection of some kind.

Treatment of a fever will depend on the patient’s age, physical condition and the underlying cause of the fever itself. While most people associate fever with physical discomfort, medical research into the matter indicates that a fever is the human body’s natural defence mechanism against infection. However, it should be noted that there are many non-infectious causes of fever. Let’s look at this disorder in a little more detail.

Causes of Fever:

In the human body, there is a part of the brain called the hypothalamus, which helps to regulate and control the body’s temperature, which is usually varies to a certain degree from normal body temperature (98.6 degrees F). While responding to any kind of infection, illness or other medical condition, the hypothalamus may reset the body to a higher temperature. While the most common cause of a fever is a common infection, like colds or gastroenteritis, other known causes include:

  • Infections of the ear, lung, skin, throat, bladder, or kidney
  • Conditions that cause inflammation
  • Side effects of drugs
  • Cancer
  • Vaccines

In addition, there are other causes of fever as well, which include:

  • Blood clots
  • Autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and inflammatory bowel disease
  • Hormone disorders such as hyperthyroidism
  • Illegal drugs such as amphetamines and cocaine

Treatment of A Fever:

The treatment procedure to be followed for curing a patient’s fever will depend on the underlying cause of the fever itself. In case of treatment of a fever due to a bacterial infection like Strep Throat, for example, your doctor may suggest a course of antibiotics.

While it is advisable to first seek the medical assistance of your doctor to ascertain the underlying cause of the fever, most common treatments for fever include over-the-counter medication like Crocin, Acetaminophen variants like Dolo (500 mg) or Disprin, Aspirin variants like Ismorin or Solosprin and Ibuprofen variants like Tricofen or Ibupal.
