Understanding Acidity

Acidity is the umbrella term which is used to explain a set of symptoms that is caused by an excessive production of acid by the gastric bands of your stomach. In the human body, the stomach usually secretes hydrochloric acid, which is required to help break down the food consumed, and aid in digestion. Acidity, in most cases, is characterised by symptoms that can include dyspepsia, heartburn, gastric inflammation as well as ulcers in the stomach.

Let’s look at this condition in a little more detail.

Common Causes of Acidity:

In the human body, our stomach, to help with the digestive process, produces gastric acids. In most circumstances, though, these acids are neutralised by the production of natural bicarbonates and prostaglandins, which are secreted in the mucous lining of the stomach. Acidity results in the production of these neutralising chemicals being interrupted, resulting in damaged stomach lining. This can be caused by a number of factors, which include:

  • Excessive stress
  • Consumption of spicy and non-vegetarian foods
  • Smoking and alcohol
  • Stomach ailments like peptic ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease, stomach tumours, etc.
  • Medications like non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

Common Symptoms of Acidity:

Commonly faced acidity symptoms, which suggest that you may be suffering from this disorder, can include:

  • Incessant burning sensation in the stomach
  • Burning sensation in the patient’s throat
  • Restlessness
  • Belching
  • Nausea
  • Sour taste in the mouth
  • Feeling of discomfort due to indigestion
  • Constipation

Treatment of Acidity:

Acidity treatment, in most cases, is aided by antacids, which can contain either magnesium, calcium or aluminium compounds. These antacids help to neutralise the excess acid produced in the stomach, thus reducing the symptoms of this disorder. Sometimes, in severe cases of acidity, your physician may prescribe the use of histamine blocking agents. In very rare cases, surgery may have to be performed to invasively reduce the acid build-up in your stomach. In many cases home remedies like consuming bananas, cold milk, mint leaves, ginger or clove may also help to reduce the symptoms of acidity.
