At Apollo Clinic, we have a team of highly qualified dieticians who will give the right advice on what to eat during pregnancy to ensure optimum nutrition for you and your baby.
How can we help you?
At Apollo Clinic, our expert nutritionists will recommend a pregnancy diet plan consisting of food groups that contain all the necessary nutrients and supplements. While pregnancy nutrition requirements vary for each expecting mother, here are some guidelines for a healthy diet during pregnancy:
Include foods rich in protein – Proteins are essential in a diet for pregnant women as they help in the baby’s healthy development. Sources of protein include nuts, pulses, beans, eggs, chicken, fish and other meats.
Take folic acid – Folic acid is highly essential in a pregnancy diet as it helps lower the risk of neural tube defects. Sources of folic acid include green, leafy vegetables and brown rice. You may also be advised to take supplements of folic acid.
Have foods rich in iron – Your body needs more iron during pregnancy as the blood volume rises. Iron deficiency could result in preterm birth or low birthweight in babies. Include foods rich in iron such as green leafy vegetables, dried fruits and nuts, and lean meat to have a healthy pregnancy and baby.
Have foods rich in calcium – Calcium plays a significant role in your diet for pregnancy as it aids in the development of your baby's bones and teeth. Dairy products, fish with edible bones such as sardines, dried fruit, tofu, broccoli are good sources of calcium.
In addition to these, there are also some foods to be avoided. Certain seafood that contains mercury; raw or undercooked fish, meats, eggs; excessive caffeine related products and alcohol are to be avoided so that you have a safe and healthy pregnancy.
At Apollo Clinic, our team of qualified and registered dieticians will first assess your nutrition requirements to have a healthy pregnancy and delivery. Based on the assessment, we will provide a customised pregnancy diet chart that details the required calorie intake, pregnancy foods to have, foods to avoid, meal timings, cooking methods after considering your current lifestyle.
